The honeymoon period of this coalition government looks like being extended only for as long as the two sides can agree.

I don't know about you but having two sides of a government against the opposition of whatever form, must be detrimental to success.

Maybe the latest call for the public to support our troops might just be the point at which the stitches become strained. It is crass stupidity to compare the universal support of the fighting men (mostly conscripts) in the two world wars with the apparent antipathy towards our modern professional army.

Why?

Ask yourself, how many people in your street are over-seas fighting for the survival of Great Britain and democracy. The modern soldier is a career soldier. He is a soldier from choice but, just as was said of those old soldiers who did not necessarily volunteer, they are still lions led by donkeys.

The public sees our troops being sacrificed on the altar of American imperial desires and greed. We do not see this great war against terrorism that the politicians are so fond of using as an excuse for sending our best youth to die futilely in the sands of Afghanistan or Iraq. We know that America has simply played the terror card and (under Blair) the UK adopted the card as the rallying call to the mob. America created a war for terror and has fought it so successfully that the world is in terror.

How sad that the world is in terror of the Americans!

I have heard it suggested that the reason European troops are in such numbers in Afghanistan is that America is not trusted to play by the rules in her greed and anticipation of the new oil pipeline (Yes - it's all about oil! Did you think differently?) nor is she trusted to maintain proper control of her gung-ho commanders who are so brain-washed that they really believe that by killing civilians in Helmand Province they are preventing attacks on Wal-Mart in Achilawapee. Certainly the reports from European troops are more coherent and convincing than some of the utter propaganda that America occasionally publishes.

The British public will support the British Army when the British Army is being used to actively protect and defend the sovereignty of the British Isles. The British public might be a little more supportive of the troops if they could see them fighting the real terror threats on their streets and in their shopping centres. The real terror attacks are coming from within. They are coming from an uncontrolled growth in the criminal element of society and nobody is doing anything about it.

The police are hands bound by 'targets' that see them chasing 'solutions' rather than chasing criminals. Not only are they hands tied in that respect, they also know that even if they capture a notorious criminal he will probably receive very little by way of punishment - especially if he plays the race card and claims that his rights were denied.

This governemnt needs to send a strong message to the public. They need to answer a simple question - - WHO DO YOU WORK FOR?

They then need to take an oath that they will do nothing that will prejudice the security of a single natural born Brit. (Dream on Old Coot - why not ask for the moon on a lolly stick?)
a.k.a. The Old Coot
To argue is to share an alternative point of view.
To disagree without a valid argument is futile.
