This part of Spain is not known for dynamic events and heart stopping revelations (give or take the odd corruption scandal and mayoral murder) but we are now facing a major down turn in retail trading.

Traditionally this time of the year sees a peak in retail sales as new winter clothes are bought and old heaters are replaced.

So. What has gone wrong?

It's all to do with the weather! While the north of Spain suffers torrential rain and low temperatures we, in the glorious south, are still basking in temperatures that are around 80ยบ in real money. The beaches are still home to many sun worshippers and even the sea is warm enough to swim in for the least intrepid.

We are told that the weather will return to normal soon and that the retailers will then find that their stocks of winter woollies and heaters will be in demand. I don't see it myself. It isn't as though our winter is very long any way. Come February we should have returned to the sort of weather we are enjoying today if it really does desert us.

As we in Andalucia look on in alarm at the terrible floods that seem to be happening everywhere else in Europe, we really do appreciate the good fortune of being situated where the sun (nearly) always shines.

To argue is to share an alternative point of view.
To disagree without a valid argument is futile.
